Maya Riviera

The Riviera Maya, part of Mexican Caribbean, begins 20 kilometers south of the Cancun International Airport and stretches all the way to the ancient Mayan city of Tulum, more than 70 miles of sandy beaches flanked by tropical landscapes and the turquoise ocean. In the heart of the Riviera Maya lies the charming town of Playa del Carmen.

Well established areas such as Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and evolving resort areas such as Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, and Puerto Morelos, give this region a variety of personalities, attractions, and atmospheres to suit every vacation style.

Playa del Carmen is widely considered the heart of the Riviera Maya. It is geographically located in the center and has maintained a true Caribbean atmosphere even as the town has grown dramatically in recent years. Playa del Carmen has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere where everything is at walking distance. The focus of Playa del Carmen, apart from its beach of course, is 5th Avenue and its adjacent streets.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya has one of the best beaches in the world. The Caribbean Sea is warm year-round, and is excellent for snorkeling and diving, as well as windsurfing and deep-sea fishing.

In front of the Riviera Maya is the world’s second largest barrier reef. A short boat ride will take you to some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the area. Another interesting experience for snorkeling and diving is to explore the vast network of underground rivers and cenotes (natural sinkholes) that are spread out in the area.

Mayan culture is present everywhere in the Yucatan Peninsula. Some of Mexico’s most fascinating and significant Mayan archeological sites, such as Tulum, Coba and Chichén Itzá, are located within an easy day trip from Playa del Carmen.

Among other activities you can explore are jungle tours, kayaking, windsurfing, parasailing, bird watching and deep-sea fishing.
