Mayan Expeditions
Chichen Itza
Two and a half hours from Playa del Carmen, Chichen Izta was one of the largest Mayan cities from 600 to 1000 A.D. Today, it is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico. Witness its natural beauty and learn about the mythical history of this ancient city.
Coba
The significant archeological site of Coba is just two hours from Playa del Carmen. This vast Mayan city remains only partially excavated, and its temples and pyramids rise up from the living jungle surrounding it.
Tulum
Just an hour from Playa del Carmen, Tulum is a well-preserved “walled city” that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. It was one of the latest settlements built by the Mayans, and it served as a port for the grand city of Coba.
Ek’ Balam
Two hours and forty-five minutes from Playa del Carmen, Ek’ Balam is infrequently visited by tourists. Its name means “Black Jaguar,” and the site features twin pyramids and a large structure with a 5-meter jaguar’s mouth as its entrance. From Ek’ Balam, both Coba and Chichen Itza are visible.
