Playa del Carmen Resorts are tropical getaways situated in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. This area was founded in 1937 and is part of the middle section of the Riviera Maya, one of Mexico’s most popular vacationlands. Not far South of the busier city of Cancun, Playa del Carmen Resorts sit right on the coast of the Caribbean Sea, and are rapidly becoming a popular getaway. The city of Playa del Carmen now has approximately 150,000 residents, which is double what it was just a few years ago. This rapid growth can likely be attributed to the ferry service that is offered to Cozumel, which allows people to see Playa and its breathtaking beaches on their travels to and from the city.
Playa del Carmen Resorts line the Caribbean coast and overlook the turquoise waters and white sand beaches. However, if you are searching for more action, there is a two-mile strip of local shops at the center of town known as Fifth Avenue, or “Avenida Quinta”. Because of the rise in traffic to the Playa del Carmen Resorts, the urban area is undergoing a massive development and even bringing chain businesses to the once small fishing community. This is a positive and negative to the local inhabitants, but one that is inevitable.
Despite impending development, locals have done a lot to maintain the area’s charm and to prevent it from becoming a metropolitan like the city of Cancun. A city ordinance prohibits the buildings, including Playa del Carmen Resorts, from exceeding four stories in height. No matter how high the buildings though, the residents will continue to bring the relaxed Latin culture they are known for to the area.
